Year 12 Chemistry    (12CHE)

The following topics are covered:

  • Quantitative chemistry
  • Atomic structure, bonding and related properties
  • Chemical reactions
  • Organic chemistry

Students study five topics (standards) that count for 20 credits towards Level 2 NCEA.

Internal Standards (Assignments)

  • C2.1 (AS 91161)  Carry out quantitative analysis  (4 credits)
  • C2.7 (AS 91167)  Demonstrate understanding of oxidation - reduction  (3 credits)          

External Standards (Exams)

  • C2.4 (AS 91164)  Demonstrate understanding of bonding, structure, properties and energy changes  (5 credits)
  • C2.5 (AS 91165)  Demonstrate understanding of the properties of selected organic compounds  (4 credits)
  • C2.6 (AS 91166)  Demonstrate understanding of chemical reactivity  (4 credits)

 

Year 13 Chemistry    (13CHE)

The topics covered in the year 13 chemistry course are:

  • Structure of particles and thermochemistry
  • Organic chemistry
  • Acids, bases, and precipitates
  • Oxidation and reduction reactions

Students study five topics (standards) that count for 22 credits towards Level 3 NCEA.  

Internal Standards (Assignments)

  • AS 91387 (3.1)  Carry out an extended practical investigation involving quantitative analysis - this standard is optional  (4 credits)
  • AS 91393 (3.3)  Demonstrate understanding of oxidation-reduction processes  (3 credits)

External Standards (Exams)

  • AS 91390 (3.4)  Demonstrate understanding of thermochemical principles and the properties of particles and substances  (5 credits)
  • AS 91391 (3.5)  Demonstrate understanding of the properties of organic compounds  (5 credits)
  • AS 91392 (3.6)  Demonstrate understanding of equilibrium principles in aqueous systems  (5 credits)
