- The school nurse will also help with any queries, her medical room is located in the Adams Building next to Room 9 (the hospitality classroom).
- Students have the right to be treated with respect by Health providers. If you have any concerns or wish to complain you should contact the organisation who provided your care or the Health and Disability Commission: www.hdc.org.nz or phone 0800 112233.

- ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) in New Zealand runs a ‘no faults’ insurance type scheme known as ACC to cover the costs of any accident the international student might have while in New Zealand. This scheme applies equally to New Zealanders and foreign visitors, such as international students and their parents/guardians. If a student has to see a doctor with an accident-related matter, it is important to let the receptionist and doctor know that the injury/concern is accident related. Students can pay less for accident related visits to a doctor. For further information you can contact ACC who will provide an interpreter. If a student and their family have a concern or issue, they are encouraged to discuss this with the school first, so support and help can be offered where needed.
If you are not satisfied by the outcome of our complaints process, you may notify the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Please refer to the NZQA website for more information on their role and process.
You may also be able to take your complaint to Study Complaints – a dispute resolution provider specialising in supporting international students in resolving disputes with their schools.
Orientation
On arrival at Glendowie College International students attend an Orientation session. During that time students are introduced to the school, to the school rules and the expectations of the school. Students have English and Maths tests to help with placing students into the correct subject or option classes according to their abilities and past experience.
Also during Orientation we take the students to the Uniform shop to collect their school uniform (excluding for shoes).
Pastoral Care and Mentoring
Students are interviewed regularly to ensure that they are comfortable in their homestay and that they are making academic progress in their subject classes.
Counselling and Guidance
The Director of International Students is available to the International Students to help with any issues or difficulties that may occur. Also available to help the International Students is their house dean, form class and subject teachers.
In the case where a specialist counsellor is needed the students can make an appointment with the School Counsellor.
Health Care
A qualified nurse is available in the school to help if a student is feeling unwell.
Checking the student’s entitlement to study in New Zealand to ensure that students have the valid and appropriate visa, can be done in a number of ways, including using Immigration New Zealand’s VisaView service
Year 12 and 13 students can apply for a variation to their student visa to allow them to work up to 20 hours a week during holiday periods with written permission from the school and their parents or legal guardian. Glendowie College recommends that students who are doing well in their studies work no more than 12 hours a week during the school terms.
Students who need to catch up with their year level should not work.

Shopping Centres in the Glendowie/St Heliers Area
St Heliers is a local shopping area with many boutique shops, restaurants, cafes and banks, and a small supermarket.
At Mission Bay, which is close to Glendowie, there is larger shopping centre called Eastridge Shopping Centre.
